In the last chapter of the book of
Romans, the apostle Paul greets 26 Christians by name. Of those, he specifically singles out nine individuals for their outstanding service (which makes it the first-century equivalent of our "Servant’s Towel"). Of the nine he commends for their hard work in ministry, six are women. Of those six, the first name on his list is that of Phoebe. Paul says "she has been a great help to many people, including me."

When I read that verse, I thought of this month’s recipient of our "Servant Towel," because Barbara Hogg is a hard-working lady who has been a "great help" to so many people. Over the years she has offered a listening ear, a compassionate heart, and wise

advice to dozens of people, both in our church family, in the community, and at her work.

In addition, Barbara has led a Ladies Growth Group, has led prayer groups, and is currently the leader of one of our

Care Groups. She is constantly looking for opportunities to minister to others. For example, Barbara has initiated a weekly ladies Bible class in the South Arkansas Substance Abuse center; she has created a support group for people with Parkinson’s; has made presentations and written a book on the subject that have been well received; and recently began a "Gentle Exercise" class here at College Avenue.

Barbara and her husband David have raised three children, all of whom are faithful and active Christians. I am proud to call this hardworking lady my sister and my friend, and was pleased on December 14 to present the "Servant Towel" for December to Barbara Hogg.
