As one of many children to
grow up at College Avenue, we could not have been blessed more with a
better song service. The singing was always great and the song
selections would be ones that would be remembered for a life-time.
In the 1970’s and 80’s one man would lead the singing week in and week
out and he was an example of what a song leader should be. He always did
a fine job and his work as a song leader will continue through the songs
he has taught so many over the years.
I once found myself in a Church where we didn’t really have anyone
talented in song leading and I noted that I would be the one that would
have to get up and lead singing. Many thoughts of fear and anxiety
entered my mind as I thought about getting up to lead singing that
Wednesday night and Sunday mornings and evenings that would follow The
only thing that would calm me down would be me telling myself that I can
do this because I can lean on the songs that "Brother Song Leader" had
so perfectly stamped in on my heart. Knowing those songs by heart and
not being able to read music, I stood up and moved forward with the
Lord’s work. The Lord and Brother Song Leader’s example lead the song
service in my heart each and every time that I had the opportunity to
lead singing.
A song that I remember the most from Brother Song Leader is “Have Thine
O Way, Lord.” He led it so many times at the end of our services so
perfectly. I can see that the Potter has used this Clay….in Doyce Jones,
"Brother Song Leader"….and that Christ only always lives in him.
