In Luke 22:27 the Lord reminded
his disciples, “I am among you as one who serves.” When we gladly serve
in the name of Christ we are following in the steps of Christ.
On March 21 we presented our Servant Towel to an individual who has
demonstrated a spirit of service here at College Avenue all her life. In
fact, when I thought about her nomination, it was impossible to state
any one project or ministry, because Myra Arnold has “done it all.”
She has taught children’s classes…..served as a Care Group
leader…..hosted Growth Groups……kept guests in her home during Teen
Leadership University…... worked in every aspect of Vacation Bible
School…..put up visiting speakers in her home……..and served on all sorts
of committees, including every building committee we’ve assembled over
the past 30 years. In fact, I well remember that when we finished this
Family Life Center she worked with her own hands, and worked as hard as
any man, to lay the tile and hang the wallpaper. There are few corners
of our buildings that don’t reflect her touch in some way.
In addition, this selfless servant has been a long-time volunteer in our
Scouting program….has worked in the kitchen during Friend
Day…..decorated bulletin boards….cleaned up, mopped up, put chairs and
tables up.
The hallmark of her life has been a willingness to pitch in and do
whatever needs to be done. And, she has done it all without seeking any
recognition or applause, which makes her exactly the kind of person we
want to recognize with a Servant Towel. I am pleased to call Myra Arnold
my sister.
