The purpose of the “Servant Towel” is to remind us all of our calling to be like Jesus by recognizing a person or couple in the congregation who is actively engaged in some ministry. Deacon Wayne Harrell is an outstanding example of servanthood because he has been in youth ministry for more than twenty years. In fact, he has the longest tenure of any youth minister here at College Avenue. Week after week this individual has been influential in molding the lives of dozens and dozens of young men. He has taught them practical skills such as carpentry, woodworking, welding, and even cooking, while at the same time instilling such essential character traits as honesty, integrity, dependability, and leadership. Along the way this youth minister has endured blisters and bears, rainstorms and snow, snakes and mosquitoes and even tornadoes. For more than two decades he has had a significant influence on the physical, moral, and spiritual development of young men, first through eight years as a Cubmaster and then, for the past thirteen years, as our Scoutmaster. During that time he has also helped twenty-seven young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. And, in addition to everything else, he has served with integrity as our Church Treasurer for many, many years.
