Here is a listing of
useful websites on the Internet. The sites are listed in no particular
order, but rather reflect the wonderful randomness of the Internet
itself.
As always, three
cautions: first, we cannot vouch for the accuracy of everything on
every page; second, remember to use the Internet with caution, because
it contains a lot of trash as well as treasures; and third, don't get so
absorbed in surfing websites that you neglect practical responsibilities
or personal relationships!
Speaking of trash, parents should never allow young people
to have access to the Internet in their bedrooms, behind closed doors!
There is simply too much filth, and too many sexual predators, to allow
any member of the family to surf the web without some
accountability. There are an estimated 3 million porn sites on the
Internet generating some $56 billion annually. The average age of first
exposure to Internet porn is eleven, and the 12-17 age group is the
largest consumer of Internet pornography. Make sure your computer is in
a central open area, and that it has appropriate safeguards, such as
filtering software.
If you or someone you love has become addicted to pornography or
is struggling with some other sexual addiction, you'll find help at
www.BethesdaWorkshops.org, a ministry that is sponsored by
the Woodmont Hills church of Christ. Two other sites that may be useful
are
www.estherministries.com and
www.obscenitycrimes.org.
The "One Nation Under God" ministry, which is sponsored by the
Sycamore church of Christ in Cookeville, Tennessee, sponsors a website
at
www.etoughtalk.com which allows individuals to take
advantage of the anonymity of the Internet to investigate a Christian
perspective on such potentially painful topics as abortion, abuse,
depression, eating disorders, sex, suicide, etc. It also contains an
on-line evangelistic Bible study.
Yvonne Davis tells us that the sermon outlines by Mark Copeland at
www.bible.ca/eo
are also useful as Bible study guides. She also recommends this site for
children:
www.childrensbiblestudy.com.
The "Truth for Today" ministry offers Bible courses in English,
French, and Russian at
www.biblecourses.com.
The AMEN (American Military Evangelizing Nations) Ministry will
contact loved ones serving in the armed forces; their website is
www.wfrchurch.org/amen.
Some 19% of the adult population will suffer one of the most
difficult experiences in the world: the death of a son or daughter.
John & Clara Hinton, who work with the Stonycreek church of Christ in
Shanksville, Pennsylvania offer a ministry to these hurting families at
www.silentgrief.com.
The "Church of Christ Online" website at
www.cconline.org
has over 15 ministry departments, announcements of retreats and
seminars, discussion forums, links to congregations with web sites,
devotionals, an online bookstore, and more. Some content is accessible
only by paying a membership fee, but other areas are free.
Preachers and teachers who use Powerpoint in their presentations
will want to know that nearly 1000 free photos of Biblical sites are
available at
www.HolyLandPhotos.org.
The Focus on the Family site at
www.family.org offers resources and
articles for families, including movie reviews and "Plugged In," which
has excellent articles dealing with youth.
Can’t remember where to find a particular phrase or passage? You’ll
find a Bible search engine at
www.bible.gospelcom.net
that allows you to locate words in a variety of Bible translations.
Ron Deal of the Southwest church of Christ in Jonesboro has
developed a Successful Stepfamilies ministry: his ministry website may
be viewed at
www.successfulstepfamilies.com.
The stated purpose of Forthright Magazine is to "wrap life and
faith around the Cross." You'll find a variety of articles at
www.forthright.net.
To access a wide variety of first principle lessons, try
www.firstcenturychristian.com.
At
www.arkansaschurches.org
you'll find a number of links to churches and ministries throughout the
state, as well as workshops, meetings, and other events. And of course,
you'll find our own website at
www.cacoc.org.
Have a site you'd recommend for our next list? E-mail it to us at
office@cacoc.org.
Note: The following section was added
7/19/2005:
Have you ever gone to a movie, only to
be disappointed by its immoral or vulgar content? Have you ever rented
a video and were unable to finish viewing it because the film contained
so much profanity or sexually suggestive innuendo? Before you spend your
hard-earned money on any form of entertainment, consider going to
www.pluggedinonline.com. There you will find a full
and fair review of movies, DVDs, television programs, and even music
CDs. The site, which is maintained by the Focus on the Family ministry,
is especially helpful in warning about content that would be
objectionable to Christians.
